How to win free stuff

I’m a competition ninja. This year alone, I have won a 12 course organic love feast, tickets to two food festivals, 2 kg of raw chocolate, a single block of raw dark chocolate, a bag of raw super food mix, a bag of gluten free oats, raw honey, luxury accommodation for four nights in Byron Bay, a digital camera, a scuba diving course, $50 voucher for a smoothie bar, a tea box, an invite to a traditional tea ceremony and a partridge in a pear tree (Ok, I didn’t win the last item, but I can keep wishing!).

I’m not telling you all this just to rub it in your face. People always say to me,  ‘Oh, you’re so lucky, I never win anything’. Well, if you’re keen for free stuff and experiences, you can send that attitude packing. Your luck is about to change!

Here are some little tips and tricks which have helped me along on my winning streak:

  • You’ve gotta be in it to win it. Yeah, a cliche. But so true! If you don’t throw your hat into the ring, you’ve got no hope.
  • Be a follower. Think of any product, brand, shop, restaurant, destination etc. that you love. Find them on Facebook and click ‘Like’. These brands want to engage their customers, and one of the most popular ways of doing this is to create competitions for their loyal fans. If you keep your finger on the pulse, you’ll be first to know about the comps that really interest you.
  • Read blogs that interest you. Whether it be a blog about food, travel, music, surfing, breakfast, coffee or garden gnomes, you should pay attention to them. They often have give-aways donated by brands wanting to gain exposure. These competitions can be easy to win, as sometimes only 2 or 3 people catch wind of the sweet prizes on offer.
  • Newspapers, local publications and magazines. Find the competitions and enter them! Easy 🙂
  • Be creative. Ok, so this is a bit more challenging, but so much more rewarding if you win! If the competition asks for an answer to a question in 25 words or less, you want to really stand out right? Try a poem…seriously, it’s corny, but if you do a good job you’re in with a fighting chance. Acrostic, rhymes, Haiku. Judges lap up that kind of thing. Personal anecdotes go down well too. Depending on the type of competition, amusing stories are a good idea, or heart warming stories can really strum the judges’ heartstrings. Cue whining violin.
  • Use their lingo. If you’re entering a competition that requires a written answer, scour the brand’s website for their ‘style’. You’ll want to write something that appeals to and aligns with their brand. For example, to win the single block of dark raw chocolate, I knew the brand was really enthusiastic about the properties of raw cacao and the notion of ‘love’, so I incorporated that into my answer. Can everyone say ‘suck up’?
  • www.win-free-stuff.com.au – I love this page, there’s loads of competitions on here added almost daily. Generally it’s website competitions. Facebook and blog competitions are rarely mentioned on here.
  • Enter loads of comps. The more entries, the more chances!
  • Enter obscure, little-known comps. If it’s a comp that’s not very well known, your chances of winning multiply. It’s awesome! If it’s a bit tricky or confusing to enter, chances are other people think the same thing and give up. But competition ninjas NEVER GIVE UP. Go for it!
  • Be speedy. Some brands on Facebook hold comps where the first person to answer a question correctly or find something will win. You just gotta have ninja Googling skills, or be quick on your feet.
  • Positive thinking. This may be a bit scoff-worthy for some of you, that’s cool! But, I find when I really believe I’m going to win something, I usually do. I truly believe the law of attraction brings the desired prize to me.

So, now you know some nifty tricks, go forth and win.
